Description

This tour to the Kayin and Mon State gives you a wonderful experience to visit the area south of Yangon. The pilgrimage site of ‘The Golden Rock’ invites many local and regional people to come and pray in front of the magic boulder balancing over a wide cliff.

Observe the pilgrims devout in prayer or applying gold leaf to the boulder and enjoy a spectacular view of the valley below. The visit up to the Golden Rock is particularly nice at sunset or sunrise.

Hpa An – the capital of the Kayin State offers wonderful country side sceneries: caves and stone formation like in Halong or southern Thailand. Hpa-An is a fairly new destination in Myanmar and has some of the best sites to visit: the scenery is beautiful with the location on the Salween River. Caves, pagodas, and unspoilt villages make this tour unforgettable

Mawlamyaing remains one of Myanmars regional cities which has not much changed over the centuries.

Important Notes:

The road from the base camp up to the Golden Rock has to be done by special dedicated trucks. You are not allowed to drive up there with your own vehicle. These open trucks are equipped with narrow benches on the back and seat belts.

Cable cars are also available from upper camp to the top. Cable cars will depart from Yathetaung upper camp to Kyaik Htee Yoe (Golden Rock) pagoda platform and return the same way. This is just one third of the journey and we still need to take the truck from the base to the upper camp. The cable cars start from 06:00hrs to 18:00hrs and the fee is US$5 per foreigner. Those who wish to try the cable cars ride, we recommend to take the ride on the way up.

During the raining season, the platform around the Pagoda can be slippery due to rain or mist.

The Golden Rock Pagoda does regular gilding in a three-year cycle. During this time, the rock will be covered in bamboo scaffolding. Prior notice is not given and exact schedule for the work are not really available.

Sunsets and sunrises on the platform can only be seen if you stay overnight.

A footpath goes up from the Golden Rock hotel to the top. The walk uphill takes around 45 minutes whereas downhill will take around 30 minutes. This path during the rainy season can be slippery.

As this is religious site, you are requested to have shirts with long sleeves and your knees covered. You also will have to remove your shoes and socks while walking over the platform to the Golden Rock.
